The origins of the word Hel is from old Norse mythology.

The origins of the word Hel is from old Norse mythology. In Norse mythology Hel is a female being. Hel is the goddess of the underworld and death.

Asatruars also believe that Hel in the Norse mythology is a place of rest. Hel is not the same for Asatruars as it is for people who follow Christianity.  In Christianity Hell is a place of fire and torture.

In some of the other Norse mythology a place known as Nastrond exists as their hell,  which is similar to the christian Hell. Nastrond is the place of eternal punishment. Nastrond is the hell that awaits oath breakers and the lowest of the low.
